From what I've heard, I'm pretty sure the writers for Lost have a wall covered in plot devices and they just throw darts at it to choose what to do next.
Oh man, maybe I should start watching again. I watched the first season avidly and at the end of it thought: there's no way they are resolving any of this.

C'mon! "Who's the Boss?" was better scripted than "Lost" . . .

That's not true. LOST is one of the most carefully plotted shows of all time.
